Sharpe's Eagle (1981) was Bernard Cornwell's first novel.
He eventually wrote 21 Sharpe novels and three short stories (and 30 other unrelated novels). Twelve of the novels were made into television films, starring Sean Bean as Richard Sharpe. Sharpe's right-hand man, RSM Patrick Harper (originally an antagonist) was played by Daragh O'Malley; the Duke of Wellington was played by David Troughton (son of the second Doctor Who) in the first two series, and subsequently by Hugh Fraser.
There were 16 television films altogether, including four that were not based on novels by Cornwell. The first two were broadcast in 1993, and three in each of the following four years (1994-7). The four that were not based on Cornwell novels were Sharpe's Mission (No. 11), Sharpe's Justice (No. 13), Sharpe's Challenge (No. 15) and Sharpe's Peril (No. 16). The last two were broadcast in 2006 and 2008 respectively.
The following table lists the Cornwell novels and stories, in chronological order of publication.
