The Chinese year usually starts on the day of the second new moon after the winter solstice. It can be the third new moon, if there is an intercalary (leap) month.
The Chinese New Year can fall on any day between the following two dates, with equal probability:
Earliest possible date | 21 January | |
Latest possible date | 20 February |
The following table gives the Chinese astrological signs for the years beginning in the Gregorian years from 1917 to 2024. This is expected to cover the years of birth of most visitors to this website. (If you were born outside this range, please get in touch – I would be delighted to hear from you!)
You can of course work out the sign for other years by adding or subtracting a multiple of 12 as appropriate. For example, 1910 has the same sign as 1922 which is the Dog.
