Perfumes

An increasingly popular type of quiz question is to ask which fashion house (or designer) produces one or more named brands of perfume. I always think this is intended to catch people out – because let's face it, most quizzers are male and perfume is a female interest. Yes, lots of men use perfume of some sort these days – but you don't see them in the perfume department at John Lewis, or at the airport, trying the different samplers. They either buy something cheap in Boot's, or they use what their partners buy them. They don't know any brands that they haven't used; so they don't know the answer to questions of this type.

However: as I've said elsewhere, I'm all for broadening the demographic of quizzing, so I'm not complaining.

That said, I'm one of those aforementioned men who either buys something cheap in Boot's, or uses what his partner buys him. As such, I am somewhat out of my comfort zone on this subject, so I'm relying heavily on Wikipedia – which lists literally hundreds of perfumes. I've selected the ones I've heard of, or that come from houses that I've heard of, or seem to be particularly venerable; and I've added a few more that I've heard mentioned in quizzes. (The numbers after the brand names are the years they were introduced.)
