Most US states have an official nickname, and many of them have a "slogan" that they use on their car licence (sorry, license) plates. These are listed (along with a few other things) on the US States: Classified page.

Many of them also have other, unofficial nicknames, or historical ones. This page lists some of these "other" nicknames – which do have a habit of coming up in quizzes.

If setting questions from this page, I would suggest you make it clear that these are not the official nicknames. For example: "Which US state is sometimes known as ... ?"
