If you like my website, and/or if you've found it useful, please consider making a small donation to my Just Giving page, which I've set up just for this purpose. To begin with I'm collecting for a charity whose work I have benefitted from myself (and continue to do so): the British Heart Foundation. It would be great to raise £100 in the first month.
If you have already donated ... Thank You!
Most US states have an official nickname; many of them have a "slogan" that they use on their car licence (sorry, license) plates; and many of them also have other, unofficial nicknames, or historical ones.
This page lists all three types, in three separate sections.
Where a nickname is in brackets in the table below, it's also the official nickname. So, if setting questions: to avoid confusing the contestant(s), if you have to ask about these in the context of license plates, it may be as well to mention that they're also the official nicknames.

Notes:
1 | As well as "Centennial State" (the official state nickname), Colorado has previously used "Colourful Colorado" on license plates |
2 | Georgia currently has no nickname on its license plates, but it has in the past used "Peach State" (the official nickname) |
3 | Kansas currently has no nickname on its license plates, but it has in the past used "Wheat State" |
4 | Louisiana has previously used "Bayou State" on license plates |
5 | Michigan currently has no nickname on its license plates, but it has in the past used both "Great Lakes State" (the official nickname) and "Winter Water Wonderland" |
6 | Montana has previously used "Treasure State" (the official nickname) on license plates |
7 | Nebraska currently has no nickname on its license plates, but it has in the past used both "Cornhusker State" (the official nickname) and "Beef State". It also has "The Good Life" on state border signs |
If setting questions from this section, I would suggest you make it clear that these are not the official nicknames. For example: "Which US state is sometimes known as ... ?"
