US States: Classified (2)
This page lists the fifty US states, in the order in which they joined the Union. There are two reasons for presenting the states in
this order, as well as in alphabetical order – as they are on the page entitled
US States: Classified (1): firstly because the order in which they joined the union is a subject
in its own right, and secondly, if the answer to a question is the name of a state, it might help you to test yourself if the states are
not listed alphabetically.
The other page – US States: Classified (1) – gives the capital cities, largest cities (where different), official and license
plate nicknames, and the date on which they joined the Union (with their associated ordinal numbers). This page, as well as the dates of
joining and the ordinal numbers, also gives the 'official' nicknames, and the largest cities. This is because in quizzes, you're
more likely to be given these details, and asked to name the state, than the other way round. In other words, the answer to the question is
the name of the state (as explained above).
In respect of the order the states joined the Union, I think it's fair to say that you're most likely to get asked about the first
few and the last few. The ones in the middle are included for completeness – not least because of the inclusion of the Nickname and
Largest City columns.
Where there is no official state nickname, according to
Wikipedia, this page gives the one that
I reckon to be the best known, and hence the most likely to be asked in a quiz.
Where the Largest City column includes '(C)', this means that the largest city is also the capital city of the state concerned.
