The first race was in 1829 at Henley; the second was in 1836, and the third in 1839. The 13th race took place in 1852, since when it has been held annually except during the two World Wars.

A similar race was run each year from 1836 (won in its first two years by The Duke, and in 1838 by Sir William), but its status as an official Grand National was revoked some time between 1862 and 1873. Most authorities, including most quiz question setters, consider the first official running of the Grand National to be the Grand Liverpool Steeplechase of 1839.
