If you like my website, and/or if you've found it useful, please consider making a small donation to my Just Giving page, which I've set up just for this purpose. To begin with I'm collecting for a charity whose work I have benefitted from myself (and continue to do so): the British Heart Foundation. It would be great to raise £100 in the first month.
If you have already donated ... Thank You!
This topic might seem, at first sight, to be on a par with Airports (i.e. severely lacking in the entertainment factor). But, rather like Airports, they can be quite interesting – because sometimes they tell you a bit about the country's history or culture. Take Benin for example.
Sometimes it's interesting to see which country got to use the single letter. Why, for example, did Cuba get C – rather than (for example) Canada, China, Chile or Colombia? And how would you guess that East African countries have EA for East Africa (similarly WA for West Africa), or that countries in the Windward Islands have W?
Anyway ... here is my selection of those that I think might come up in your next quiz – and which you might not be able to work out without a hint.
In the tables below, the third column gives the expression from which the initials are derived, in the local language (where appropriate). You probably wouldn't want to test yourself on them, but I've hidden them because they would give a big clue to the country (most of them include it).
For other Rs, see the list of republics (below).
The following might appear baffling, until you realise that the R stands for Republic (not always in English).
